The best comfort for a Shiba Inu: beds and cushions.

Table of contents

Just like it is an excellent hunting dog, the Shiba Inu also adapts well to living in an apartment, provided that you can exercise it. Moreover, it is a particularly clean animal, so the choice of its nest is very important.

A bed for a Shiba Inu should have a length of 80 to 100 cm.

For my Shiba Inu, cushion or bed?

Your Shiba Inu deserves a place to lie down that offers the comfort it needs. Indeed, like most dogs, it enjoys having its own space. If it doesn’t have that space, it will quickly tend to seek refuge under tables, beds, or sofas. In these surroundings, it feels more reassured and protected. Otherwise, a good bed prevents disturbed sleep and back pain. Therefore, there are various options for dog beds, but the most popular are the cushion and the bed. In both cases, they must provide the comfort and protective assurance it needs.

When choosing one or the other, consideration should be given to its length and width. In addition to the choice of the type of resting place itself, the material used to make it should also be taken into account. Furthermore, it is important to observe the habits of the Shiba Inu to know whether it prefers to sleep lying down or curled up. Generally, it must be admitted that this dog, like other breeds, prefers beds over cushions.

How do you choose a dog bed?

Yes, Shiba Inus prefer beds over cushions. This is because beds have sides against which they can nestle. However, it is important to consider the size of your Shiba Inu when choosing a bed. Indeed, it shouldn’t feel cramped, and your dog should also be able to stretch out. On the other hand, the bed shouldn’t be too big either, as that could prevent it from feeling the sense of ‘protective shelter’ that it loves so much. This resting place is ideal, especially if your dog enjoys curling up.

The other important aspect to consider is the material. At this level, remember that plastic is recommended if it is a puppy. Indeed, keep in mind that at this age, discipline is not their strong suit, and he might quickly despoil his bed. However, plastic beds are very resistant and easy to clean, making them more hygienic. Once the dog is an adult, you can replace the plastic with a bed upholstered in leather or a soft faux fur.

There are also wicker beds, but they are less recommended. It is true that they provide better ventilation, but their branches deteriorate over time and can injure your pet. Several cases of perforated stomachs have been reported because dogs ingested the wicker branches. Moreover, dust gets stuck in them, which is not pleasant at all to clean.

How do you choose your dog cushion?

The cushion should be soft and comfortable to keep it warm. You should also consider its size and it should be slightly larger than him, so he can stretch without exceeding it. Otherwise, he may not accept it. Some cushions have covers that can be replaced for washing. Others are waterproof and can be washed directly. Furthermore, the cushion is more suitable for your companion if he prefers to lie down with his whole body.

The preferred materials are cotton, fleece, or nylon. Cushions made of foam should be avoided. Know that if your Shiba Inu eats it, he cannot digest it, and it would cause his stomach to swell. Suffice to say that the consequences can be fatal for him. Generally, a low-quality cushion can quickly deform and become uncomfortable. Additionally, cushions are more practical for traveling.

If you are unsure between a bed and a cushion, keep in mind that you can always make a compromise by choosing both. Indeed, it is possible and recommended to place a cushion in a bed, especially if it is made of plastic. Finally, the cushion and/or dog bed should be installed in an appropriate location. It could be a corner that is protected from drafts but also from premature passages. Otherwise, they might be disturbed, while his shelter should be his resting place. Finally, it should not be placed in an overly isolated space so that it does not feel abandoned.
